SpaceX, after the successful landing first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket on a solid ground, made another attempt to put it on a stand-alone floating platform.
Unfortunately, after the successful launch and the separation of the second stage, which according to the plan launched weather satellite Jason-3 to low Earth orbit , the first stage of the Falcon 9 hit on a floating platform, but the security lock on one of the rocket landing gears did not work and falcon collapsed.
Apparently, unsuitable weather conditions also played the role , waves at the landing site sometimes reached 3.5-4.5 meters.
Despite the failure of the landing, SpaceX already said that they plan to continue trying to land the first stage of the Falcon 9 on a floating platform. This will give them opportunity to save fuel, as an autonomous floating platform can “catch” a rocket, and it does not have to overcome vertical and horizontal distances to return to the landing pad.
So far, Elon Musk already stated in his twitter account that landing ship is needed not to save fuel, but because returning rocket to the launch site is not possible
Ship landings are not needed for flexibility or to save fuel costs. Just not physically possible to return to launch site
